Located on the corner of Lonsdale & Elizabeth Streets, St Francis’ is the oldest Catholic church in Victoria and the oldest church on its original site in Melbourne. The first Mass was held in 1839 in a temporary structure; the present building was completed in 1845. St Francis’ has been undergoing extensive restoration works since 1996.

For over 160 years, St Francis’ has been a much-loved place of prayer and worship in the centre of the city. Under the care of the Blessed Sacrament Congregation since 1929, today it is the busiest church in Australia, with more than 10,000 visiting worshippers each week. St Francis’ renowned choir is an important part of the church’s musical life, and the Pastoral Centre provides a wide variety of services including spiritual direction, counselling and hospitality.
